UTOPIA OF RHYTHM

  • Jump and move through blocks and other obstacles in time to the rhythm.
  • Keep up with the tempo to make it through the different colours.
  • Gain power ups to get through the levels more easily

Abertay University was selected to create and develop two games for the Young Game Designers competition BAFTA hosted. I was part of a 17 man team that took the ideas of these young achievers and made them into reality in 4 weeks. I collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to implement an enjoyable game play experience for Utopia of Rhythm. I designed and play tested level design ideas and helped to deliver games within the time frame. It was showcased to The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on their visit.

Jack Reynolds – Utopia of Rhythm BAFTA YGD Winner
Due to the nature of this project and that fact we only had 4 weeks, made the development process very challenging but exciting. We only had the prototype level Jack made for a point of reference to recreating his idea. So the biggest challenge was making sure it adhered to his design. So we drew out three design pillars for the game which included rhythm, tempo and modularity. Rhythm and tempo because these were what the main mechanics were based on and modularity so Jack could go forward and create his own levels using what we created.

The Level design was another important aspect which i helped create to fit with jacks expectations. I play tested his level then drew features out from that and then added my own to promote rhythm and timing for a fun but challenging game play experience.
